Persib Bandung Held to Late Draw by Lion City Sailors in AFC Champions League Two Opener
Bandung – Persib Bandung were denied a dream start in the AFC Champions League Two 2025/26 campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore’s Lion City Sailors at Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium on Thursday (September 18, 2025).
The Indonesian giants broke the deadlock early in the second half through a well-worked goal in the 47th minute. But just as victory seemed certain, German striker Lennart Thy struck late to rescue a point for the Sailors.
Hodak Frustrated by Late Lapse in Focus
Head coach Bojan Hodak lamented his side’s failure to close out the match, admitting a lapse in concentration at the death proved costly.
“It’s unfortunate. Towards the end of the game there was a small mistake, and this happens in football. When concentration drops, mistakes come,” said the Croatian tactician via the club’s official channel.
Despite the disappointment, Hodak praised his players’ fighting spirit and overall performance, describing it as one of the best showings in recent years.
“One of Our Best Games in Three Seasons”
For over 80 minutes, Persib looked in full control, pressing high and limiting the visitors’ chances.
“I think this was one of our best performances in the last three seasons. For 80 minutes we played fantastic football, not giving them any chance. Unfortunately, we couldn’t score the second goal. At this level, you really have to finish games properly,” Hodak reflected.
The coach also stressed that despite the result, Persib can take confidence moving forward.
“This competition is on a completely different level compared to the domestic league. Our opponent today was last season’s finalist, and yet we dominated the game. That’s a big positive for us,” he added.
Group G Challenge Ahead
Persib are placed in Group G alongside Lion City Sailors (Singapore), Bangkok United (Thailand), and Selangor (Malaysia). With one point from their opening fixture, the Bandung side will need consistency to push for qualification to the knockout stages.
